Shishkin's paintings successfully combine an analytical approach with magnitude of an epic scope of vision. The picture, which became a symbol of Russian landscape art, combines two artist's traditional motives: rye fields with road escaping afar and mighty pines. Artist' paintings are always brilliantly composed, there is nothing casual in them.

The artist did not take a great interest in the modern currents associated with searches for light-air environmental transformation.
