The picture was painted from sketches taken in the village Molvitino (now Susanino) of Kostroma Province. The piece was shown for the first time as part of traveling art exhibition in 1871 and marked the inception of a new era in the development of Russian landscape school - the birth of lyrical landscape. The simple, modest phenomenon in nature can reflect painter's personal spirituality.
