Both, Fyodor Moller and Nikolai Gogol were close friends, often traveling together. Most likely, the portrait was painted in Italy, during one of the shared tours when both painter and writer were at the peak of their creative careers. Perhaps, it was painted during one of the trips friends took through Roman vicinities. The portrait was acquired by P. Tretyakov for his portrait gallery "people dear to the nation".
