Our Lady of Vladimir

The icon was painted by Byzantine master at the beginning of XII century. The most famous Russian national holy place, Palladium of the Fatherland. According to chronicles sources, the icon was brought to Russia to Kiev from Constantinople around 1130. However, its actual worship did not begin in Kiev, as in Vladimir, until the icon was moved in 1155 by Prince Andrew Bogolyubsky. From 1480 to 1918, the icon of Our Lady of Vladimir was in the Assumption Cathedral of Moscow Kremlin.

This icon is among the very earliest icons created in Russia to celebrate Christmas Stichera (Poetry), singing on the second day of Christmas. In the center of the icon - Virgin sitting on the throne and holding young Christ image. All other characters portrayed in the icon, in accordance with Stichera text, presenting to their gifts. In the upper corners of the icon are small images of St. Nicholas and St. Paraskeva.
